What is moneyness in crypto?
Moneyness is an options term. It describes where an option's strike price is compared with the coin's price right now, which tells you whether the option would have value if it expired today.
There are three states: in the money (ITM, it would pay out now), at the money (ATM, the strike is about the current price), and out of the money (OTM, it would expire worthless now).
An example
Why it matters to a beginner
Out-of-the-money options are cheap because they usually expire worthless. Beginners buy them hoping for a big move and often lose the whole premium.
What to watch for
- Whether the option is a call (bets on up) or a put (bets on down).
- How far the strike is from the current price.
- How much time is left before it expires.

CoinSparring doesn't offer options, but you can practice the idea behind them, betting on direction with a fixed risk, using spot trades with a stop-loss.
Common questions
Does moneyness apply to normal coin trading?
- No. It only applies to options. For spot trading the closest idea is whether your position is in profit or at a loss right now.
Which is better, ITM or OTM?
- Neither is better. ITM options cost more and are more likely to pay; OTM options are cheaper and pay more if a big move comes, but usually expire worthless.
